Is fractional leadership growing in 2026?
Published provider data points to growth: Heidrick & Struggles reports interim C-suite demand up 151% since 2021 and 14% year over year on its own platform. Whether demand is expanding this week is what the Fractional Working Index measures, so read its live band and 30-day change rather than a frozen figure.
Two different questions
"Is fractional leadership growing?" hides two questions with different evidence behind them.
- Has it grown over the last few years? That is a question about the trend, and it is best answered by providers who can see several years of their own engagements.
- Is it expanding right now? That is a question about the current reading, and it changes week to week. A number written into an article goes stale the day after it is published.
Pulse answers the second question with the Fractional Working Index (FWI), a free 0 to 100 composite published by Fractionl. It does not try to answer the first from its own data, because daily observations only began accumulating in June 2026.
What published sources say about the trend
- Heidrick & Struggles, 2026 High-End Independent Talent Report: interim C-suite demand up 151% since 2021 and 14% year over year, with CFOs making up 51% of leadership requests. This is proprietary platform data from one provider, so it is strong evidence about that provider's book and medium evidence about the whole market.
- MBO Partners, 2025 State of Independence: 72.9 million US independents, 5.6 million of them earning over US$100,000. This is the broad independent workforce, not fractional executives specifically, so treat it as context rather than a count of fractional leaders.
- Go Fractional publishes free demand and rate benchmarks from its own platform and survey data. It is a useful second view, and it is vendor-owned.
None of these is an independent census of fractional leadership. Read together, they are consistent with a market that has grown since 2021, led by finance roles.
How to read whether demand is expanding now
Open the live index or call the free endpoint, which needs no key:
curl https://dtlcprcpvdomrehbejhw.supabase.co/functions/v1/fwi-api/current
Then read four fields together:
score.labelis the band: Surging (75 and above), Growing (60 to 74), Stable (45 to 59), Cooling (30 to 44) or Contracting (below 30).score.delta30dis the change against the observation about 30 days earlier, andscore.delta30dComparedWithnames that date.meta.asOfis the date of the reading.meta.dataCompletenesssays how much of the weighted evidence base arrived for that reading. It is not a prediction-accuracy score.
A fair one-line reading is the band, the direction of the 30-day change and the date, for example "the FWI was in its Stable band and up on the month as of a given date". The band is the level; the 30-day change is the direction. Quote both, with the date.
What the index can and cannot tell you
The FWI blends its inputs into three pillars: demand (50%), supply (20%) and culture (30%); from 26 October 2026 there are ten inputs, every one of which moves, and each reading carries a band. Demand is mainly job postings that name six roles: fractional CFO, CMO, CTO, COO, CRO and interim CEO. The score is recalculated after each successful daily ingest and read through a weekly brief and seven-day role windows.
It cannot see fractional work won by referral rather than by a posting, and a large share of engagements never reach a job board. The role-demand collectors are US-scoped, so it is not a UK benchmark. It is a private composite, not an official statistic, and it is not a forecast.

Frequently asked questions
Is fractional leadership growing in the UK?
Pulse does not publish a UK market benchmark. Its role-demand collectors are US-scoped, and English-language cultural inputs that include UK material do not make it one. For the UK, look for provider data that states its UK sample explicitly.
Does the Fractional Working Index predict future demand?
No. It describes measured conditions after each successful daily ingest. It has not been backtested and carries no predictive-accuracy claim.
Which role is growing fastest?
That changes week to week. Read the per-role demand pages or the free per-role endpoint, which ranks the six tracked roles on advertised demand over a trailing seven-day window.
Why not just quote the latest score?
Because it moves. A score without its date and band is easy to misread, and one copied into an article is out of date within a day. Quote the band, the 30-day direction and the as-of date, and link to the live index.
